Team Performance Training:
Grow Effective, Efficient, Cohesive Teams

The best known and most successful companies in history (past and present) have one thing in common: a commitment to team building.

As the managing Director of Rank Xerox has been known to say:

"Quality is not natural, but teamwork is!"

This mindset has become the cornerstone of operations in the Xerox Company, and it has served them exceedingly well.  Not coincidentally, that concept is easily supported by viewing the successes of other top Fortune 500 companies.

What Successful Businesses Know That Others Don't

Fortune 500 companies understand that their success is directly attributable to the functionality and efficiency of their teams…

Experts agree.

By focusing on the qualities of employees that increase function and subsequent profitability, those companies have come to top the list of the most successful and admired businesses, and those essential qualities are their ultimate key to success.

The most successful companies have distinguished themselves in one critical way: they recognise a number of personal factors that impact an individual's effectiveness on a team, and they work to develop those traits favorably for the betterment of team function.  They favour attributes like self awareness and self management, as well as social awareness and social skills.

These attributes were shown to be the foundations of individual success within top earning organisations.  The inability to work in teams was identified by executives in these companies as being the second leading reason why "high potential" leadership candidates failed to progress – nearly 60% of organisations surveyed cited this inability (lack of clarity only exceeded lack of team working ability).  Insensitivity ranked third; interestingly, lack of technical ability was last on the list, noted by a mere 9% of respondents.

It was also discovered that among top performing companies formal team building and development trainings were very highly valued.  The most successful companies offered formal team development and training opportunities at least 36% more often than less successful peer organisations.

From all of this it is easy to infer that a commitment to team building is a critical factor in the success of an organisation.  This came as no surprise to us, as we have held these beliefs for a very long time, and helped raise many international businesses to the top by conducting effective team building trainings for them.

The Process of Team Building

The entire team success premise is however built on two distinct stages.

One, during our trainings, we will work with the participants to develop the skills required to most effectively lead their teams - whether they are currently fulfilling a leadership role, or have the potential to do so. We work cooperatively with participants so they recognise the skills and attributes that are important in a leadership position and, through this process, they also learn to recognise their own strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Two, allow the participants to develop the tools required to create their own leadership style which can be adapted according to specific situations. Additionally, each participant builds their own "personal development plan" to help ensure that behavioural changes occur following the training programme thereby creating maximum benefit for the team leader, the team and the organisation. Ideally, the programme is delivered in a modular approach to allow for the practical implementation of new skills and for sharing experiences to learn from each other.

During each of our team building exercises, we keep the focus on developing team synergy to optimise team performance; our teaching focuses on enhancing individual strengths and using those strengths for the success of the whole.

We do this by first teaching participants how great teams are built.  We:

  • Identify leader
  • Analyse team strengths and weaknesses
  • Structure a plan of action
    • Set team goals using a team approach
    • Help members understand the role of individual team members
    • Show teams how to meet the needs of the parts (the individuals) to meet the needs of the overall group
  • Develop the skills needed to implement the action plan

Part and parcel to team building is developing leadership skills and a respect for those in authority.  We define the role of the leader and work with leadership candidates to enhance:

  • Communication
  • Mindset and attitude
  • Creative problem solving
  • Delegation
  • Management of team members, emphasizing the effect of the part on the whole
  • Crisis management
