Leaders are a special breed – a committed and talented leader can single-handedly turn a company from good to great. While leaders come in all shapes, sizes and colours, and even hold all different manners of creeds, there are a number of traits that they all hold in common.

A positive attitude is certainly one of these qualities. Remaining positive and optimistic during a rough patch can instil an unbreakable sense of comradery in the workplace. All leaders should inspire their team.

Still, having a positive attitude isn’t enough. A leader needs to be able to communicate with those under his or her command. Making yourself understood and clearly laying out your expectations is the hallmark of good communication.

Finally, effective leaders need to have an ample reserve of self-confidence that is tempered by an ability to trust those that they are in charge of. Leaders need to lead from the front, but must never forget all of the people pushing him or her forward from behind.
