After looking through piles and piles of CVs, conducting interviews and calling references who give the candidate incredible reviews, you may just feel like you’ve hit the jackpot and have found the ideal manager for your hospitality business.

But after the honeymoon is over, things may start to rise to the surface, and signs that you’ve hired the wrong person might make you rethink your decision.

Here are a few warning signs to look for when a manager simply can’t take the pressure of hospitality management:

  • Issues with deadlines- if a manager has an issue setting or sticking to deadlines, alarm bells should go off immediately. With no deadlines being set, it means that the staff never feel a true sense of achievement, which can create a negative and stressful environment.
  • A focus on the small things- If a manager buries themselves in other tasks and volunteers for loads of things they don’t know much about, this is a clear sign that they are making themselves busy, perhaps to hide the fact they don’t know how to do the job they were hired for.
  • Being overly-sensitive with staff- If the manager isn’t able to be direct and honest with staff members, this is a clear warning sign. Managers need to be able to solve problems effectively and have the ability to communicate with their staff even when it comes to difficult matters.
